The Co2 tax or ‘Special Registration Tax’ is an emission tax in Spain that all new imported vehicles need to pay to regsiter the vehicle here. The tax is calculated by the information of your vehicle from your documents. This is a 1 off payment for registration and never applicable again.
To calculate the co2 includes:
- The age of the vehicle
- The Co2 reading of the vehicle G/KM – grams per kilometre
- The make, model, and engine of the vehicle
- The vehicle value (as of now and according to the Spanish tax system)
- The fuel of your vehicle
What is IVTM – Circulation Tax?
IVTM Circulation tax functions like road tax for vehicles to operate on IVTM (Impuesto sobre Vehículos de Tracción Mecánica) which is a local tax in Spain. All vehicle owners in Spain must pay IVTM to drive on public roads. Discounts do apply depending on the vehicle for example hybrid and electric vehicles are cheaper. That said road is is relatively cheap in Spain. The vehicle cannot be registered without it been paid for the current year until approx. may to June of the following year.
What is a certificate of conformity- COC?
A CoC is about the original design and EU homologation of the product as it was manufactured. If you have this an engineers report is not necessary.
A Ficha / engineers report is a substitute or complementary document to a CoC, created to help register vehicles in Spain, especially imports. It is not possible to do an inspection without this and it needs to be signed by an expert with a declaration.

What is the DGT in Spain?
The DGT stands for Dirección General de Tráfico, which translates to the Directorate-General for Traffic in English.
